Every time I sit down with a portrait client, I can’t help but notice the nerves that seem to fill the room. It doesn’t matter if I’m working with a real estate agent, a family, or even a surgeon—there’s always that initial wave of intimidation when they see the lights and the camera. It’s completely normal, and I totally get it.
I’ve had clients who walk in with a ton of confidence, but as soon as they sit in front of my photography lights, that confidence can waver. So, what do I do? I reassure them that the process will be painless, enjoyable, and even fun! I want to help them relax, so I take a moment to walk them through what to expect during the session. It then becomes my job - and my pleasure - to put them at ease as we move forward with the session.
The Warm Welcome
When you walk into the room, you might notice the setup: my photography lights, a backdrop, and a chair waiting for you. I can see the apprehension in your eyes, and that’s okay! I’ll greet you with a smile and let you know that all you need to do is sit in the chair. I’ll guide you through the entire process, so there’s no need to worry.
We’ll start with some warm-up shots. These aren’t the “real” photos; they’re just me getting dialed in with your unique skin tone, outfit, and lighting. I’ll tell you that you don’t even have to look at me if you don’t want to. Just relax! I’ll let you know when we’re officially starting the session.
Getting Comfortable
After a few practice shots, I’ll say, “Okay, now we’re starting the real thing!” I’ll take a handful of photos and then show you what we’ve got. I believe in collaboration, so I want your input. Everyone has a “good side,” and I want to capture you in the best light possible. If you see something you like, let me know! I have a little star rating system on my camera to mark the shots you love.
As we continue, I’ll gently direct you on how to sit and pose. I often remind my clients that tightening your core can really affect how your photos turn out. I’ll guide you on where to look and how to position your head and shoulders. It’s all about finding that perfect angle!
A Fun Experience
Throughout the session, we’ll chat about your family, your business, or whatever comes to mind. I love getting to know my clients, and I find that sharing a few laughs helps everyone relax. You might even notice me getting a little excited about the shots we’re capturing. I can’t help it—I’m passionate about what I do!
If you’ve brought a couple of outfit changes, I’ll encourage you to switch it up. We’ll repeat the process with your new look, taking more photos and getting your feedback along the way. And don’t worry—while the photos you see on my camera are un-retouched, I always reassure you that the final images will be polished and ready to shine.
The Final Touches
After we wrap up the session, I’ll let you know when to expect your photos—typically within five to seven business days. You’ll receive a link to your online gallery, and I can’t wait for you to see the results!
If you want any tweaks or additional retouching after you’ve seen your photos, just let me know. I’m more than happy to make those adjustments to ensure you’re thrilled with your portraits.
Conclusion
So, if you’re feeling nervous about an upcoming photo session, I want to remind you that there’s no need to be intimidated. My goal is to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience that authentically represents you and your personality. I’m here to make sure you feel comfortable and excited about capturing your best self. Let’s make some magic together!
