My Experience with AI Business Headshot Services
I recently found myself curious about the whole AI business headshot scene. With AI becoming more and more prevalent in various sectors—writing, design, videography, art, and yes, even photography—I thought, why not give it a shot and see how it compares to my own photography? After all, I’ve been doing business portrait and headshot photography for years here in Port Huron and the surrounding areas, and I wanted to see how my skills stack up against these new AI services.
AI is impossible to ignore as it is. I've recently noticed a surge of ads for AI headshot services on Instagram lately. That's what put it on my radar try one out. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see how an AI could capture a professional headshot without the hassle of a photo session?
The Upload Process
So, I uploaded a photo. Some services promise to deliver a polished headshot in just a couple of minutes, while others might take hours. I went for the speedy option. The AI returned a so-called “professional headshot,” and let me tell you, it was a bit of a letdown.
The Results
Right off the bat, I noticed that the image didn’t look real. I mean, the human eye is pretty good at picking up details, especially when it comes to headshots. We’re sensitive to things like skin texture, pores, and that overall “realness” factor. Unfortunately, the AI-generated image I received looked more like a highly stylized image, to the point of being an illustration, as opposed to an authentic, real headshot.
I decided to experiment further and uploaded several different test photos from various clients—both men and women—to see how the AI would handle them. The results were consistently underwhelming. The skin looked overly smooth, devoid of any texture (no pores at all!), and the facial features often appeared altered.
Some Surprising Changes
One of the most surprising aspects was how the AI seemed to take creative liberties with the person's age. I uploaded a photo of a gentleman who I guessed was in his late 60s or early 70s, and the AI returned an image where he looked like he was in his early 50s! I didn’t expect that at all.
In another case, I uploaded a photo of a balding man, and the AI decided to give him a full head of hair. I mean, come on! If he were to use that as a professional headshot, people would definitely notice the mismatch.
And then there was the woman whose photo I uploaded. The AI removed what looked like 30 pounds from her image, to the point where it didn’t look like her at all.
The Human Touch
As a photographer, I pride myself on my ability to connect with my clients and understand their needs. I often ask for any specific adjustments they’d like after the shoot, and I make sure to keep the edits natural. The goal is to ensure that they look like themselves—just a polished version. I always strive to make my clients look like their best selves, but I believe in doing it tastefully and ethically.
With these AI services, however, it felt like they were trying to create an idealized version of the person rather than capturing their true essence. The lack of skin texture, the odd changes in hair color, and the overall cartoonish vibe made it hard for me to take these results seriously.
Final Thoughts
In the end, I’m glad I tried out these AI headshot services, but I have to say, they didn’t hold a candle to the quality of work I provide as a human photographer. There’s something irreplaceable about the human touch—being able to interact, understand, and create a genuine representation of someone.
However, I'm curious to see how these AI headshot services develop over time. As with the plethora or burgeoning AI services out there, I'm sure they are developing and improving their models over time. But at the end of the day, no matter how great an AI headshot is, it's STILL AI.
If you’re considering getting a headshot, I hope my experience sheds some light on the differences between AI-generated images and the work of a professional photographer. Of course, the choice is yours, and there are plenty of options out there. If you have any questions about my headshot services or want to chat about the process, feel free to reach out!
